It began when Papa's wife and Papa began breeding cats. They had so many that he was able to illustrate a book which he produced before the Alphabetabears, and was called Alphabetacats.
He is clever with the names, isn't he?
By the time this book was produced, Dede (her real name is Avril) and Papa had bred enough kittens to have one for every letter of the alphabet.
That's why they are called
Alphabetabears & Alphabetacats
. . . and Papa says that's 26 cats

Their grand-children's nursery provided a good home for the teddy-bears as they had more and more.
But, by the time this stage had reached the children had out-grown the teddy-bears. It didn't stop Papa (well nothing would stop him). He was working all the time on writing and drawing.
Do you know that there is one teddy-bear missing;

I was actually in Papa's drawing studio when he took this photograph. I spent hours sitting for him as he sat me down, made me stand up, stand on my head and lots of other 'poses'.
It is tiring being a famous teddy-bear!
I wonder if there are 26 bears here?
